Elmira POW camp a deadly place

My great uncle, the son of BF Moore, "The Father of the NC Bar" was imprisoned there. In a letter after the War, my great, great grandfather stated that he didn't think George would ever amount to anything, as he had no interest in life, evidently broken because of the imprisonment, but fortunate that he didn't die like so many. BF Moore took George to Elmira after the War. Possibly, he thought that this would help him.

Below is an excerpt from a letter that the camp's Yankee doctor wrote.

"......I think I have done my duty having relieved 386 of them (Out of 10,000 Rebels) of all earthly sorrow in one month."

Major Sanger, his letter to General *Hodsdon which wasn't replied to........

* This is the correct spelling.
